Constructors should compensate residents

I am a resident of Vorna Valley, and have over the year witnessed a dramatic change in the landscape of the area close to Allandale Road.

It seems no one ever considers the impact these new developments have on the residents of Vorna Valley.

I’m referring to those of us who spend hours in traffic because of road changes; those of us that had to fork out extra on fuel and maintenance because of traffic and deteriorating road conditions; those of us that had to carefully negotiate our way past the hundreds of chevron boards and maverick construction truck drivers and those of us that had to exercise extra caution when travelling on Allandale at night or in the early parts of the morning because it wasn’t considered necessary to provide adequate lighting on whats considered a treacherous stretch of road.

I’m referring to parents who had to re-adjust their schedules to leave earlier in order to get their kids to school and then get to work on time.

No one considers what we have had to endure or that the only ones benefiting from this are the developers who will, without a doubt, rake in billions of Rands.

Its frustrating knowing that my time and money is being consumed on a cause which doesn’t benefit me and I’m positive that this sentiment is shared by my fellow residents.

Although change is inevitable, I believe that the residents should be compensated for bearing the brunt of the mayhem that the building project brought with it.

The compensation I propose is the development of a recreational park where residents can relax or have picnics.

The maintenance thereof should be the responsibility of the developers for the duration of the construction and the road changes and thereafter become part of the budget of the local municipality.

I challenge our local counsellor to take up this fight on behalf of the Vorna Valley constituents and I challenge the developers of both the office park and Waterfall estate to acquiesce to this proposal as a gesture of goodwill.

Alternatively you need to knock on the door of every Vorna Valley resident and offer an apology to each of us for exposing us to months of miserable traffic congestion, arduous travelling conditions and irrecoverable expenditure.
