Beware not to let Home access scam in Midrand

MIDRAND - On 26 July I experienced two separate incidents where strangers tried to gain access to my home.

Sector chair for the President’s Park Resident’s Association, Steve Johnstone writes:

The first incident occurred when a man looking for an address across the road asked my wife if he could be let in to ask our gardener. He was insistent and told her that he could “ask anyone he wanted to”

My wife refused him entry.

Shortly after, a vehicle with no number plates arrived and informed her that they needed to check the tracking units in our vehicles.

We had not made an appointment with the tracking company, so she wife also denied them entry.

As he had no appointment, he was not let in. He kept on explaining why he had to check, but luckily my wife refused.

I am, warned the community about a possible scam in the Midrand area and implored the public to be weary of the following service providers trying to gain entry to your home:

1. A meter reader, since all meters are outside.

2. Telkom to repair phone, if no appointment has been made.

3. Plumber & Electrician, if no appointment has been made.

4. CoJ Septic tank vacuum, if no appointment has been made.

5. Parcel delivery, if nothing has been ordered and you aren’t expecting anything.

Johnstone added, “It’s simple. If you are the slightest bit suspicious or unsure – do not open your door.”
