Is Midrand becoming a slum?

Marian Symons from Carlswald Plot Watch and Carlswald Residents' Association writes: It concerns me that Midrand is slowly turning into an urban slum.

The residential areas of Vorna Valley, Noordwyk, Erand and Carlswald are all earmarked for high-density developments, but there is no road capacity to handle the increased traffic flow.

Residents sit in traffic gridlock in the mornings and evenings with little or no assistance from Metro police. Carlswald is bearing the brunt of the development plan of Joburg Metro, but there is no plan to improve the rural roads in this area.

The intersections of Harry Galuan and 7th avenues have not been upgraded to accommodate turning lanes to ease traffic congestion and this results in dangerous roads in Carlswald. The intersection of Albertyn and Harry Galuan roads is another example of an intersection in need of upgrading.

These two intersections cause traffic gridlock in the peak hours. Surely with all the bulk contributions from the developments along Garden Road, Carlswald Kyalami Waterfall, there is money in the kitty to do these upgrades?

Why are the roads not built or upgraded first to accommodate the development plan of the Joburg Metro before they inflict this decline in the living conditions of the existing residential areas.

My next major concern is the lack of integrity of the developers. Buildings are built before any building plans have been submitted or approved; traffic impact studies are not available, the site development plan is not submitted and these all affect the existing services negatively and yet they get away with it. This is the very reason why Midrand will eventually be a slum.
