Traffic congestion on Allandale Road

Alison Powell writes: Allandale Road narrows to one lane at Greig Road when travelling towards Kyalami from the N1.

At the intersection with Main Road, it widens again to two lanes – one marked ‘straight only’, the other ‘right only’ with a slip to the left.

This results in a massive bottleneck. I have lived in Vorna Valley for close to three years and travel that stretch of Allandale Road twice every day to and from work.

I have yet to see more than about one car a week, and maybe the odd bus that originates from inside Kyalami Race Track, using the ‘straight only’ lane, so this lane stands empty while the tailback to turn right blocks the whole of Allandale Road back right up to the highway at times.

Intrepid motorists frustrated by this have taken to using this empty ‘straight only’ lane to turn right and there, Metro police have not done much, allegedly, only taking bribes from frustrated motorists. The police add to the congestion by stepping into the traffic and pulling people over.

We approached DA councillor Candy James who said it was a provincial road and the City had no jurisdiction over it. A similar situation is on Main Road, at the intersection of Shakespeare Road.

The two lanes suddenly converge into one, forcing everyone into the left hand lane for a few metres before the road widens again. Who designs these road markings?
