‘Take responsibility to conserve water’

Glen Austin resident David Morris writes:

IN THE words of an old hymn, God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform.

In this case, ‘a wonder’ transformed the Glen Austin Pan from a muddy puddle on 29 October to a wonder wetland on 30 October over a few short hours.

All of this, courtesy of a burst water main on Dale Road, from which several thousand litres of water flowed down into the pan. Bird life returned within a short time, as the transformation continued!

Given the current delayed summer rains, this was indeed a great gift, even though pans often dry on a cyclical basis. So far so good – but what if the water had gushed into a storm water drain and been lost, to no avail, as may often happen?!

South Africa is currently facing one of the worst droughts in over 20 years. It is, therefore, imperative that everyone takes on board the responsibility to conserve water and that municipalities and the Department of Water [and Sanitation] do everything they can to minimise such leaks and upgrade defective pipes etc as a matter of extreme urgency.

Oh, and keep on praying for the rains (although predictions indicate a drier summer).
