Midrand police constable takes part in the Comrades Marathon for the first time

Constable Maluleke said that, as this was his first marathon, he had learned to prepare well and guard against overtraining to avoid injuries.

Midrand police’s social crime coordinator, Constable Thabo Maluleke, participated in his first-ever Comrades Marathon.

And now, he is looking forward to running many more of the ‘Ultimate Human Race’.

Asked about his preparation for this big race, he said he started in January this year with weekly targets of 80km to 100km per week.

“The preparation was good. The only challenge I had before the Comrades was a groin muscle injury. I think this was caused by over-training.”

Maluleka added his groin injury started bothering him shortly after Botha’s Hill, at about the 70km mark. He said his pace dropped, ultimately hampering his target of 08:30:00 to get a silver medal, but he remains proud of his time of 08:36:00.

Maluleke talked about how he qualified.

“To run the marathon, you need a licence. So, I registered with the SAPS Gauteng Athletic Club in January 2024 because I knew I wanted to participate in the marathon. I was told I needed to qualify, so last year I did the Soweto Marathon – doing 42km under four hours.”
