Midrand Striders wishes its runners well in the Comrades Marathon

As race day approaches, club members shared their feelings of anticipation and readiness.

Midrand Striders Running Club recently held its final long run and Comrades Marathon Breakfast, a vital event to celebrate and wish good luck to the dedicated individuals preparing for the Comrades Marathon on June 8.

The club welcomed eight-time Comrades Marathon finisher Shahieda ‘Makhi’ Thungo. She is also well-known as the ’12-hour bus driver’ who picks up runners who won’t finish the marathon, and her insights were invaluable.

The 70 runners from Midrand Striders will participate in this year’s Comrades Marathon.

She shared her extensive experience and provided essential guidance to both seasoned runners and novices, helping them prepare for the ultimate human race – a gruelling 89.98km journey from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

In addition to Makhi’s wisdom, Midrand Striders podium finisher and Comrades Marathon green number holder Sharon Newman offered an engaging overview of her experience in the Comrades, having completed the marathon 18 times. “I look forward to experiencing the camaraderie on the day of this ultimate human race,” said Newman.

Midrand Striders runners are all excited for the coming Comrades Marathon.

Midrand Striders proudly ranks among the top 10 clubs for members who both start and finish the Comrades. Last year, the club achieved an impressive 92.8% completion rate, and this year, 70 dedicated members will take on the challenge of the Comrades Marathon.

As they prepare for the race, club members are ready to confront this monumental challenge. Runner Christopher Esterhuizen expressed, “I feel a mix of nervous excitement. This is a mental, physical, and spiritual journey.”
