Midrand chess movers and shakers finish the year with gold, grit, and growth

Midrand’s young chess players capped off an unforgettable year packed with medals, milestones, and community pride.

As they close off 2025, the Midrand Chess Club proudly reflects on a year defined by growth, development, and remarkable achievements from its young players.

This year, the club has solidified its foundation, providing a dynamic environment where children not only learn, but also thrive, compete, and gain confidence through chess.

Kgosimang Molefe, the club’s chairperson and head coach, highlighted the impressive accomplishments of the players in 2025, particularly at prestigious tournaments like the JMC Crawford International event, where one of their stars clinched gold. “Our juniors also delivered strong performances at the Youth Day Rapid and various rated events throughout Gauteng. The October Rapid Tournament, at Halfway House Primary, was a significant achievement, uniting 48 young competitors and showcasing the incredible talent within our community.

Molefe proudly acknowledged the unwavering support from the volunteers and the local community. He emphasised that this year was pivotal for the club’s stability and impact. The club further extends deepest gratitude to Halfway House Primary School for consistently hosting their weekly sessions and tournaments. “Your support is vital to our mission.

“We also want to recognise the parents and guardians for their steadfast commitment: Transporting their children to sessions, nurturing their development, and standing by them through every triumph and setback.

“Our sincere appreciation goes to the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation for their continued acknowledgment of youth development in chess. Most importantly, we thank our players, whose dedication, discipline, and passion drive everything we do.”

As they look to kick off 2026 on a strong note, the club is set for its first tournament of the year on January 31. “We are eager for another year filled with growth, competition, and impactful community engagement. Wishing everyone a safe, joyful, and restful festive season.”
