Midrand learners mark Workers’ Day with action-packed schools sports festival

With medals on the line and pride at stake, Midrand’s young athletes delivered electrifying performances on the first day of the festival.

Hundreds of learners from across Midrand and surrounding communities converged at Midrand High School on Workers’ Day, despite the cold, for a two-day sports festival.

The Midrand High Sports Festival, which kicked off on May 1 and concludes on May 2, features a range of sporting codes, including soccer, netball, and basketball, with medals, trophies, and other prizes up for grabs.

Midrand High head of sport, Sthembiso Buthelezi, oversees proceedings during the annual sports festival.

Participating schools include host Midrand High School, Ivory Park Secondary, Maphutha Secondary, Mayibuye High School, Pepps Motheong, and Crawford International, among others, bringing together a diverse mix of public and private institutions.

Midrand High’s head of sport, Sthembiso Buthelezi, said the event is not just about competition but about creating opportunities for young people to connect and grow through sport.

“We’re hosting a sports festival where we’ve invited different schools to come together and compete across various age groups,” said Buthelezi. “We have football for U15s and U16s, basketball for both boys and girls in multiple age categories, and netball games.”

He added that the festival also aims to commemorate Workers’ Day in a meaningful way by investing in young people. “The purpose of the tournament is to celebrate Workers’ Day with our children, while also giving them a platform to showcase their talent and interact with others from different schools,” he said.

“We want to build collaboration between schools and support talent from all backgrounds. This is also about uplifting schools from ekasi and giving them opportunities to shine,” he said.

The competition follows a points-based system on the first day, with teams progressing to quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals on the second day. The final matches are expected to take place on May 2, with the main cup finals scheduled for around 14:00.

Buthelezi emphasised that the festival is an annual initiative and called on local businesses and community stakeholders to get involved. “This is something we host every year, and we encourage businesses and community members to partner with us so we can continue supporting and developing our children.”
