Midrand Chess Club raises the stakes with a R7 050 prize fund tournament
Midrand Chess Club is set to deliver one of its most competitive and exciting tournaments yet, as players from primary school level through to experienced competitors prepare to face off in a rated classical chess event this May.
Midrand Chess Club is continuing its drive to grow the game of chess in the community, with the club preparing to host its fifth tournament of the year on May 30 at Halfway House Primary School.
The upcoming Chess SA rated Classical Chess Tournament is expected to be one of the club’s biggest events yet, bringing together junior and senior players in a competitive day of strategic battles on the chessboard, while also offering substantial cash prizes.

It will follow a 60-minute classical format with no increment, allowing players more time to focus on tactical and positional play.
Participants will compete in three sections: open, high school, and primary school.
For the first time since rebuilding after the Covid-19 pandemic, the club has secured sponsorship support that has enabled it to introduce a major prize fund valued at R7 050.
In the open section, players finishing from first to fifth place will receive cash prizes ranging from R2 000 to R300. High school players will compete for prizes between R750 and R50, while primary school participants will battle for bronze, silver, and gold medals.
Club coach Kgosimang Molefe said the tournament marks an important step towards strengthening chess development in Midrand.
“This edition represents a significant commitment to making chess accessible across all age groups and skill levels. By offering three distinct sections, we’re creating pathways for young players to develop, while giving experienced players a competitive platform.”

He said the club hopes to turn the event into an annual flagship tournament that will continue building the local chess community. “The R7 050 prize fund and Gauteng sports medal support show that we’re serious about recognising excellence and encouraging participation.
“The 60-minute classical format means games will unfold strategically, rather than relying on quick calculations. You’ll see real chess thinking. The Swiss system also ensures players compete against opponents of similar strength, making the five rounds exciting and competitive.”
He said the club’s progress would not have been possible without the support of parents, volunteers, and local chess enthusiasts who continue to invest their time and resources into developing the sport in Midrand. He added that the club’s long-term vision is to establish Midrand as one of Gauteng’s leading chess hubs by creating more opportunities for young and experienced players alike.
Molefe encouraged players of all skill levels to enter the tournament and urged residents to support youth-focused sporting initiatives in the area.
Registration for the tournament closes on May 27 at 20:00. Organisers said registration will be online only and no cash entries will be accepted at the venue.
