Blue Hills dads bond with kids through sport

Ahead of Father’s Day, Blue Hills Preparatory brought fathers, learners and teachers together for a fun-filled sports celebration designed to strengthen family bonds through games, competition and teamwork.

Blue Hills Preparatory honoured dads for Father’s Day at the school’s sports ground on June 19.

Learners, fathers and teachers were dressed in their favourite soccer jerseys.

The school’s organising committee, which consisted of teachers from all grades, mentioned that the idea to celebrate Father’s Day in this manner was a collective one.

With Father’s Day taking place around the same time as the Fifa World Cup, the school felt the need to incorporate the occasion into a sporting event.

Unlike the Mother’s Day celebration, where mothers got to relax, fathers were encouraged to sweat it out for the day, helping to strengthen the bond between them and their children, while also allowing the little ones to enjoy physical activities.

One of the organisers and a Grade 4–7 teacher, Frans Venter, said that it felt more fitting to have fathers participate in an activity like this because they do not usually enjoy sitting around.

A variety of games, including soccer, tug of war and table tennis, were part of the day’s activities.

The learners had fun playing alongside their fathers, while some enjoyed cheering for their dads, especially when they were competing against other fathers.

The fun for many of the dads also continued during competitions such as the dress-up competition.

The winner of the competition, Mogomotsi Chuene, shared how he felt about his win and highlighted his favourite moments of the day.

“The biggest highlight for me is seeing the teachers’ efforts in making this day possible for us and the kids. But more than anything, seeing the fathers represent fathers, while the mothers also came to support and the uncles being here too, has really been fun.

Because we have had the most fun throughout the day so far, winning the dress-up competition was just the cherry on top for Kabo [child] and I,” said Chuene.
