Summerhill College participates in first Inter High Athletics

The school finished first in 12 events and broke a few records.

Summerhill College competed against stiff competition in its first-ever Inter High Athletics on October 5 at Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort.

Their competition included Christ Church Preparatory School and College, American International School of Johannesburg, Pinnacle College Kyalami, Sacred Heart College, and St Peters College.

Summerhill athletes performed well having the smallest team on the day. They finished first in 12 events and broke a few records.

The head of sport at Summerhill, Reece Prinsloo, praised his athletes and said athletics and sport activities in general are great ways to build and develop fundamental skills.

“What stood out for me from the event was the fact that a small team like Summerhill supported their friends till the end. I am proud to be associated with such a small school with the potential to grow,” he explained.

Prinsloo said in the coming years they seek to develop a sporting programme that promotes and gives athletes equal opportunities like in other sports.

The top performers from Summerhill College includes:

  • Summerhill star Tanaka Murisa (U14) competed in four events and won all: 100m – 11.32 seconds; 200m – 23.99 seconds; 400m – 56.50 seconds (new capsule record); high jump – 1.6m

  • Surprise package of the day Rileigh Makhele (U14) finished top two in her three events: 100m – 14.23 seconds (first place); 400m – second place; long jump – 3.92m (second place)
  • Omphile Mathosa (U14) won her only race of the day, she was supposed to compete in two more events but obtained an injury: 800m – 2:51.09 minutes

  • Senior learner Raphael Lebogo (U17) enjoyed his final sporting event for his schooling career by winning his shot-put event and coming second in his high jump: shot put – 11.77m; high jump – 1.70m
  • Munashe Tarwireyi (U19), another senior in the Summerhill team, won his shot-put event and set a new capsule record: shot put – 8.83m
