Local DJ nurtures his newly found passion
IVORY PARK – Thato Mlaedi, better known as SlimG said that he plans to release Audio Concept Volume 5 in May this year.
Like many others who used their free time during the lockdown to explore their talents, use their talents to their advantage to make an income or even learn something new, 18-year-old Thato Mlaedi, better known as SlimG De DJ, took a leap of faith and explored his passion for music.
Born and bred in Tembisa, the current Ivory Park resident said that his journey in the music industry began last year. “I used to listen to music while alone in my room. I would watch DJs play live on television and that influenced me. That’s when I decided that since we are in the midst of a lockdown, why don’t I also start a music career? Plus being a DJ attracted me,” explained Mlaedi.
Mlaedi said that after learning how to DJ, he decided to make mixtapes and share it with people on social media platforms. “Because clubs were closed there was no way I could play live. I decided that the lockdown would not affect my passion. I started doing my own live streams last year for people to recognise me and my brand.
“While also doing live streams, I decided to work on mixtapes and release them under a [label] called Audio Concept Records (ACR) where I can share the music I love with people – which is Afro-house and amapiano, but not just any amapiano songs, instead those referred to as ‘private school piano’.”
When Mlaedi was in Grade 11, he was not only inspired to follow music after school but was also intrigued by the business side of music. “I want to study courses on music as well to understand the business side of the industry, that is my plan after matriculating because I am sure we have seen many incidents whereby people in the industry retire without a dime left to their name.”
He concluded, “I believe for now people can anticipate a release of Audio Concept Volume 5 on 9 May this year.”
