A devastating fire claimed the life of 21-year-old son and destroyed the home of his father, a teacher at Eqinisweni Secondary School, in Klipfontein.

The tragedy occurred on September 15, leaving the family shattered and the community in mourning.

Despite the incident happening in mid-September, the official police statement was only released on September 30.

Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed that an inquest has been opened following the young man’s death.

“The case is an inquest case opened at Rabie Ridge SAPS. The matter is still under investigation. The cause of the fire is not yet established; we are still waiting for the report from the fire department,” said Sekgobela.

When asked about unconfirmed allegations that the fire may have been an arson attack targeting the teacher and his family, Sekgobela responded,
“We don’t have information about the attack for now.”

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona expressed the department’s sorrow over the incident.

“The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. Our psycho-social and employee wellness team was dispatched to the affected employee and family accordingly,” said Mabona.
