Police officers sentenced to eight years for stealing sheep

The two were positively linked to incidents where 58 sheep were stolen at Goedgedacht Farm in Standerton around January 2011.

STANDERTON – The Evander Regional Court sentenced two police officers, Warrant Officer Selby Langa (49) and Constable Sizwe Mndebele (42) on August 4 on charges of stock theft.

According to police information Langa and Mndebele were positively linked to incidents where 58 sheep were stolen at Goedgedacht Farm in Standerton around January 2011.

“During the investigation, it was discovered that the duo went to the farm on several occasions and stole the sheep using a state vehicle. They were also positively linked with another case of stock theft which took place in December 2010, of which Mndebele was acquitted,”said Brig Leonard Hlathi.

They were both sentenced to eight years imprisonment and an additional four years to Langa on the case for 2010.

The police management in the province welcomes the sentence as it is an indicative that they will not keep any rotten elements within the service. They believe that it will serve as a deterrent to other police officers who might think of engaging themselves to any criminal activities.
