Primary school principal charged with possession of child pornography

Local primary school arrested and charged with child pornography.

NELSPRUIT – A local primary school principal was arrested and charged with possession of internet child pornography yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

He appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court on pornography charges. The case was postponed to September 19 and he was released on bail of R1 000.

According to a source, the principal was alleged to have been investigated by a police unit from Gauteng, which specifically investigates internet child pornography. The source also told Lowvelder that the man was alleged to be accessing a site from Canada on his computer.

Lowvelder news editor Ms Nicolene Smalman said that, by law, the paper may not identify a person suspected of a sexual crime until he or she has pleaded in court. She added that if the paper named the school, the principal would automatically be identified.

Lowvelder Facebook users have inundated the site with queries regarding the identity of the man and school. There has also been an outcry about the site publishing only partial information. Smalman says the public has the right to know and in such instances where a high-profile person is involved, the newspaper is obliged to act swiftly.

“The intention is not to create panic, but rather to inform,” she said.
