Residents waiting on home

Residents are getting tired of waiting on homes they were promised

March 15, after he had raised a serious concern regarding the slow pace.BARBERTON – Residents of RDP houses in the area are still waiting for their incomplete units to be finished.

It’s been nearly a year since they were promised a speedy process to finish their homes, and they are getting tired of waiting.
Some of them are even considering selling their houses since they can’t afford to complete them themselves due to lack of employment.

Others have already decided to occupy the incomplete units, saying that they don’t have any other means of shelter.
They also claim that crooks have turned their incomplete houses into criminal havens.

Mr Samuel Nkambule (64) told Mpumalanga News that he had decided to abandon the slum and occupy the incomplete house because he wanted to prevent his house from being vandalised.

“I am old and dependent on a social grant. I can’t afford to complete my house, so I have decided to move in even though I don’t sleep well at night, especially when it’s windy since I used old boxes to cover the windows,” he said.

Another resident said, “What is the use of having an incomplete home? This is a joke. It’s better to sell the house and use the money for other needs.

I was hoping that by the end of this year I would have moved into my RDP house, but it’s highly impossible.”

The dilemma started when contractors who were awarded tenders to build the houses, failed to meet premier Mr David Mabuza’s deadline which was on Mr Zibonele Mncwango, the spokesperson for the premier said, “All I’m aware of is that the provincial government has announced the rapid-implementation unit, where the government will be hands on in terms of addressing the issue of RDP houses.

“So far 60 per cent have been built within 100 days. Selling the houses is seriously unacceptable, we do not encourage the community to do that.”
