Mpumalanga News celebrates World Egg day
The centre has 14 caregivers and 15 other members who are responsible for home visits.

PIENAAR – As today marked World Egg Day, your favourite newspaper, Mpumalanga News paid a visit to Simunye home based care centre in the area to celebrate the day with children.
Speaking to this newspaper, Ms Thembi Nkosi, who is the project manager at the centre, said that they realised that there are many orphaned children from the community and as a result they established a drop-in centre and a home based care centre for them..
She added that the centre, which was established 1999, also assists children with homework and provides them with food which includes assisting the elderly and people living with HIV/AIDS in the community.
The centre has 14 caregivers and 14 other members who are responsible for home visits.
“We are funded by the social development department, local churches, the business sector and the community itself,” she said.
She, however indicated that the funds that they receive from the department aren’t sufficient to maintain the children from the centre.
“The money we get is not enough to maintain the children and it caters for the food during the week. What about the weekends,” she asked.
She added that they deal with children who are emotionally abused and some who are doing, but are much older for the grades that they are in.
Nkosi said they are looking into ways that will assist those who are over 18 years of age because the centre only takes care of children from the ages of 0– 18 years.
“There is also a perception that caregivers are not literate, hence we are encouraging caregivers to have ABET level 4 as a requirement. We also need help to access funds not only from government so that we can be able to assist ourselves and not rely so much on the stipends we receive from social development,” she concluded.
They are further appealing to Good Samaritans to assist them to expand their centre, which needs to establish a food garden, expand the building to cater for extra classes and maybe also have a computer centre and many other amenities which can further better the lives of their underprivileged community.
