JazzFest Seeing the Sound photographic workshop

The course is an intensive week whereby participants can expect to extend their existing skills to learning of skills, technique and perspective required for the unique requirements of jazz photography.

Applications to participate in the 2014 ‘JazzFest Seeing the Sound Photographic workshop’ are open. Under the direction of acclaimed photographer Peter McKenzie, practicing professionals will learn conceptual approaches of perspective, practice, and approach rather than basic technical concerns. Technical realities will inform the visual voice of the photographer and participants will be encouraged to explore a wider repertoire of possibilities outside of the contested space of live stage photography.

The course started in 2011 as an extension of the well-established Arts Journalism workshops. Some of the week’s sessions will combine with Gwen Ansell’s course to explore and consolidate the relationship between words and images and photographer/journalist collaboration.

‘Seeing the Sound’ is also a tribute to the Founder of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), Rashid Lombard, who for many years as a newspaper photo-journalist, captured many of the country’s historic moments.

The course is an intensive week whereby participants can expect to extend their existing skills to learning of skills, technique and perspective required for the unique requirements of jazz photography; an appreciation of the history of jazz music, jazz photography and their synergy; exploiting the technical language of photography for impact and the development of a personal visual voice; exposing and composing for effect; using new media; the peculiar ethics of jazz photography, stage and audience etiquette; editing skills and caption writing.

The workshop is part of the overall training and development of the CTIJF which has committed to conveying a love of the arts to youth and current professionals alike. Interested parties are requested to submit their enquiries soon as the course only accommodates ten candidates. Employers of photo-journalists are also invited to invite their staff to enroll as they will also ultimately reap the benefits of the in-depth learnings and experience that will be garnered from attending.
