Heavy rains to hit Mpumalanga until Friday

Department warns all residents of the province to be on alert of heavy rains that are predicted for Tuesday, 04 March until Friday, 07 March 2014.

MBOMBELA- The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) in Mpumalanga would like to warn all residents of the province to be on alert of heavy rains that are predicted for Tuesday, 04 March until Friday, 07 March 2014.

“These heavy rains are expected over the South and Western Mpumalanga Highveld,” said Mr Georgte Mthethwa  from the department.

Mthethwa added that the department has instructed all 21 municipalities to be on full alert and on standby.

“The heavy rains could result in an increase of dam and river levels thus making small streams and rivers very dangerous. People are advised to move away from river banks and they must avoid crossing full rivers and over flowing bridges,” he added.

The department also  calls on members of the community to take precautions especially those  staying in low-lying areas.

Road users are also urged to be extremely cautious on the roads as they will be wet and rocks might have fallen in some areas.

In case of any possible flooding residents are advised to call the Disaster Management Toll free number 0800 202 507.
