Parents overwhelmed with joy

After years of sleepless nights, studying hard, for their education, TUT students finally graduated in different fields.

MBOMBELA – Restrictions on ululating during the graduation ceremony at the Tshwane University of Technology last Wednesday, could not stop proud parents from praising their children for their achievements.

The master of ceremonies had requested the parents not to ululate when diplomas and certificates were conferred to hundreds of deserving students, but they were too excited.

They danced, ululated and did clan praises, showing the graduates how proud they were of them.

One of the joyful parents, Ms Reginah Maile, said she could not contain the joy in her heart after her child, whom she raised on her own and fought for to acquire proper education, received her diploma in tourism management.

“There’s no way I cannot ululate, it is our culture to do so in celebration of proud moments like this one, especially those that come once in a lifetime,” she told this reporter.

Motivating the students, Mr Cedric Vilakazi, CEO of Union Motors warned them not to use violence when they had grievances with the university’s management. He emphasised that the youth of 1976, during the Soweto Uprising did a good job to fight for the education that they were enjoying now, but should not be copied in terms of using violence.

“Although their behaviour was applicable at the time, you should shy away from such actions. They did a good job and yours is to pick up the stones and build a future, friendship and solid relationships with relevant stakeholders that you will need on your journey,” he advised them.
