MBOMBELA – Preparations for the national conference of the ANC Youth League (Ancyl) are underway and the big question is who will be chosen as president of the league?

Mpumalanga News learnt that some of the candidates in the race for the presidential position included the former treasurer,
Mr Pule Mabe, the national coordinator of the National Task Team (NTT), Mr Magasela Mzobe and the former deputy president of Ancyl from this province, Mr Ronald Lamula.

During the media briefing of the league held at the January “Che” Masilela House, provincial chairperson Mr Desmond Moela stated that at this stage the province hadn’t disclosed who they were supporting on the candidates’ list as branches still needed to decide.

Meanwhile, a political analyst indicated that it was going to be a very tough race for the candidates. Speaking to this publication, political analyst for the University of Zululand, Mr Zakhele Ndlovu said, “It’s not going to be an easy race because if you check the candidates, they are well-known people.

It will depend on the provinces who their choice is, but anything can happen.

“Mzobe still stands a good chance to lead the league because it seems like many provinces are supporting him. He has gained more support since he ascended to his current position in the NTT, compared to the others.”

Ndlovu alluded that the new leadership of the league had to work tirelessly to restore the image of the league after the dramatic events that led the National Executive Committee to disband the leadership and branches of Ancyl.

“The new leaders will have to work hard when it comes to rebuilding the league since many people, especially the youth, were disappointed when it was disbanded, and, on the other hand, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) attracted many young people since some of them had faith in the president of EFF,
Mr Julius Malema,” he explained.

He added that chances of the people who joined EFF returning to the youth league were very slim. Ndlovu, however, emphasised that leadership squabbles in the EFF – as was the case in the Congress of the People (COPE) a few years ago – might prompt young people to return to Ancyl.
