NDP could create a million jobs

Gumede said the NDP would have created more jobs, decreased the level of poverty and skilled more people by 2030.

WHITE RIVER -The agricultural sector is expected to create more than a million jobs by 2030. This was according to the MEC for agriculture, Mr Andrias Gamede when he spoke at the SA Subtropical Marketing Symposium last week at Ingwenyama Conference and Sport Resort .

He told a group of farmers, marketers, growers, packers and processors that these million jobs would be achieved through the National Development Plan (NDP), a brainchild of the president Mr Jacob Zuma.

“Agriculture is the key driver in addressing government’s triple challenges, which are poverty, unemployment and inequality. The NDP is also clear on how the country should position itself in the world, the key being increasing trade with regional partners in Africa. The emphasis should also be placed on the role that the country can play in influencing BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) policies in the global economy.”

Gamede added that the province had aligned its priorities with the NDP, through Mpumalanga Vision 2030.

“The province has therefore adopted an approach towards developing rural economies in agriculture by creating more jobs through agricultural development.
“We will also focus on developing industries such as agro-processing, tourism, fisheries and small enterprise, where the potential exists. This province, under the leadership of our premier, David Mabuza, has elevated the building and completion of the Mpumalanga Fresh Produce Market in the next three years.

It will provide a platform for marketing and international trade, enhancing the country’s current capacity. Mpumalanga and Limpopo will benefit from the market channels. It should be noted that both provinces contribute a large share of the total production of sub-tropical crops,” Gamede concluded.

Since taking over the reins, Gamede has transformed this department into a well-oiled machine, and to enhance service delivery he recently roped in the services of an experienced HOD, Ms Sindi Mjwara.

In his speech during his visit to the province, the deputy president, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa also mentioned the NDP and its plans to transform the country towards the 2030 vision.

He said the NDP would have created more jobs, decreased the level of poverty and skilled more people by 2030.
