Shortage of water stops residents from voting

“I am not going to vote because I’m still struggling to live a better life. I’m not a stepping stone for politicians to get high positions. All of them are the same."

BARBERTON – Even though citizens of this country came out in their numbers to the polls to cast their votes yesterday, Mpumalanga News learnt that at Extension 14 there are residents who did not partake in the local government elections because they were struggling to get water since Umjindi Local Municipality is among the municipalities in the country that is affected by drought.

One of the affected residents, Mr Themba Mkhobong said: “I was looking forward to go to the poll to exercise my right of casting a vote, but due to lack of water, I did not make it. I was supposed to organise a bakkie so that I could go and fetch water from a river so that we could be able to cook and do laundry. We need to face reality, we can’t live without water, it’s a source of life,” he alluded.

Another resident, Ms Hlengiwe Dlamini said: “I am not going to vote because I’m still struggling to live a better life. I’m not a stepping stone for politicians to get high positions. All of them are the same. They make empty promises that they don’t fulfill. It’s just a waste of time and energy,” she concluded.
