Sedan crashes claim more lives

In one of the accidents five people were killed instantly when the Sedan they were travelling in collided with a truck on the N4 bypass near Schoemanskloof, leaving the truck driver with slight injuries.

MBOMBELA –  Four Sedans were involved in three separate crashes that claimed 11 lives on Monday.

One of the Sedans was coming from the direction of Mbombela when it crashed into the truck which was travelling from the direction of Machadodorp.

Another three people were killed on the same road when a driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. Two passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
Three other people lost their lives when a head-on collision between two Sedans occurred on the R50 between Leandra and Standerton on January 2 at around 20:00. Both drivers died, along with a five-year-old. The mother sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Evander Hospital.

Mr Pat Ngomane, MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, urges motorists to remain alert on the road at all times to avoid crashes that continue to claim lives.
Ngomane further appealed to drivers to tolerate one another, avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking. “Always ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and that those who drive are fit to do so.
“Our law enforcers will continue to deal harshly with those who go behind the steering wheel while they are intoxicated,” said Ngomane.

He further advised travellers to plan their journeys well in advance such that they are able to accommodate delays which lead to increased levels of impatience that often lead to over speeding.
