A consideration to blacklist water users.
Department of Water and Sanitation is considering blacklisting individuals who cannot pay their debts due to them.
MBOMBELA- This proposal was tabled before the Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation on Wednesday when the department presented its Quarter One report for the 2017/2018 financial year.
“As much as we are considering blacklisting people, we cannot cut their access to water as it is a basic need,” said the department’s spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.

He also said that they can engage with municipalities to come up with plans on how to get water users to pay their water debts. By the end of June 2017, the department only managed to collect R115 million out of more than R7 billion of the money owed to it by municipalities and water boards. The failure to honour the debts has caused lack of progress for the department to deliver on their mandate.
