People indiscriminately suggest Mabuza’s successor
Who is likely to become the next Premier after DD Mabuza?

As Premier DD Mabuza was elected deputy president of the ANC in a highly contested election yesterday, our independent survey revealed that former youth league deputy president, Ronald Lamola emerged as a favourite to replace Mabuza as both chairperson and premier.

Current PEC member and provincial treasurer, Vusi Shongwe was another name that emerged from our survey. Shongwe is also the current MEC for agriculture in the province and has been an acting premier when Mabuza was critically ill a few years ago.
Mathews Phosa’s name was also mentioned a few times. The latter was one of seven contenders for the presidency but lost out to Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who fought neck to neck for the presidency, with the former emerging as the new president.
The real successor to Mabuza will be determined through a provincial elective conference to be determined by the organisation.
