“It is alleged that in the evening of the said day, a 26-year-old woman was preparing supper for her family. It is also alleged that her male friend told her that something was burning in the kitchen, but she indicated that the stove was off. The male friend then allegedly went into the kitchen and returned moments later.

Later, it is said that the woman dished up for her father and her two children. The male friend allegedly refused to eat, citing that he would have his meal later. The woman did not have a meal as well, since it is alleged she often had meals together with her male friend in the same dish,” read part of the police statement.

“A few moments later, it is reported that the little girl got sick and started vomiting. Moments later the boy also followed suit. Their grandfather later joined the queue and it was at this time that emergency services personnel were called. Upon their arrival, the two-year-old girl was certified dead. The boy and the woman’s father were taken to hospital for treatment.

“The Elukwatini police were informed about the incident and a case was opened accordingly. An investigation was conducted and the preliminary findings suggested that the family members were victims of the alleged poisoning.”
