Mpumalanga DA leader urges National Government to cut fuel hikes and levies

The DA called on Government to remove excessive taxes and levies and lower the cost of fuel.

During a media briefing on Wednesday May 25, the Mpumalanga DA leader, Jane Sithole, said the expected hikes on fuel will be a crisis to many South Africans.

“South Africans are struggling to make ends meet. Life is getting harder everyday, but the fuel prices that are set to increase, will hit the people harder. This will send millions of citizens into a financial and humanitarian crisis,” Sithole said.

“We call on the government to reduce taxes and lower fuel prices so that food, petrol, and the cost of living can all be affordable. We also ask all South Africans to join the DA’s fight to reduce fuel prices. We urge everyone to join hands to take a stance, because we are all affected at the end of the day.”

Sithole said the party will have a petition to scrap fuel hikes.
“We have a petition that we are asking all people to sign, because we need as many signatures as possible. The price of petrol will rise to R25 per litre on June 1 as a result of government taxes. We will keep this petition up for a long time so that everyone in South Africa may sign it and our national leader, John Steenhuisen, can submit it in Parliament.

“We understand there are some factors that affect the fuel, like the price of oil due to the Russian and Ukrainian war, but the taxes the government is charging us, are the major factor for fuel increase. We ask people to visit #SlashFuelPrices to join the campaign,” said Sithole.
