The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution due to rain across the province.

The department shared the following tips with motorists to avoid accidents:

– Reduce speed on slippery roads

– Maintain a safe following distance

– Ensure wipers are working properly

– Keep lights on for increased visibility

– Avoid flooded areas and overflowing river bridges

Motorists should plan ahead, consider alternative routes, and drive during the day if possible. Be extra cautious of roadworks on N4, N11, N12 and R40, as rain can make them more hazardous.

Yesterday the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an orange level 9 warning for disruptive rain over Gauteng, the extreme eastern parts of North West and the extreme western parts of Mpumalanga.

According to a statement published by the SAWS, the rain could lead to widespread flooding, damage to formal and informal settlements, danger to life from fast-flowing water, communities becoming inaccessible and disruptions to essential services such as water and electricity.
