eMkhondo traffic cop dies after taxi hits him

The officer was trying to stop the taxi when the accident occurred.

An eMkhondo traffic cop died after a taxi, which he was attempting to stop, knocked him down this morning, January 24.

Jabulani Collen Ndlovu (46) was operating a speed trap along the N2 between Ermelo and Piet Retief when the taxi hit him.

Ndlovu was rushed to a hospital in eMkhondo [formerly Piet Retief] where he later died due to his injuries,” said Moeti Mmusi, the provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson.

He said the taxi was travelling from Ermelo to Piet Retief when the accident occurred.

“The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide,” said Mmusi. However, he was not able to clarify whether the taxi driver had been arrested or not.

Meanwhile, MEC Jackie Macie sent his condolences to Ndlovu’s family, friends and colleagues. He said other traffic officers must not be discouraged by this tragic incident, but continue to perform their duties.

“While pursuing errant drivers, we want our traffic officers to be safe. They must be vigilant and protect each other when on the road. On the other hand, motorists should comply with directives given to them by law enforcement,” Macie concluded.
