Bushbuckridge snake catcher badly injured – no snakes involved

Cockroach Mdluli sustained serious injuries after the car that he was driving crashed into the back of his colleague's car and overturned.

The famous snake catcher, Cockroach Mdluli, narrowly escaped death on January 22 when he was involved in an accident.

No, there weren’t any snakes involved in this particular case.

Mdluli said the accident happened when he was driving a Bushbuckridge Local Municipality (BLM) emergency vehicle, following another one.

The occupants of the two bakkies were on their way back from retrieving the body of a child who had drowned in Arthur’s Seat two days earlier.

“I was driving on the Thulamahashe road when I crashed into the back of my colleague’s car. I lost control before it overturned. I was alone in the car when it happened, and the Jaws of Life were used to extract me. I was stabilised on the scene before I was rushed to Kiaat Hospital where I am currently receiving medical attention. I was lucky to have escaped death, because worse could have happened,” he said.

As a result of his serious injuries, the intrepid snake catcher needs to undergo more operations before he can be discharged.

The occupant of the other vehicle was mostly unharmed and was treated on the scene.

The BLM’s spokesperson, Pfumulani Thobakale, confirmed that two of their vehicles were involved in an accident.

“We currently do not have full details of what happened. We will wait for the police to do their investigation to provide us with the reason for the accident. We would like to wish Mdluli a speedy recovery at the hospital,” she said.
Thobakale added that they do service their vehicles regularly and the two bakkies were in good condition.
