Woman found in possession of copper cables, to apply for bail in Calcultta

The woman was remanded in custody after her court appearance facing a charge of suspected stolen Eskom property on January 29.

Nombango Claudia Mogiba (52) appeared in the Calcutta Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of stolen Eskom property on January 29.

During her arrest earlier that same day, she was allegedly found in possession copper cables and tarpaulins by the Hawks with other investigation units.
The Hawks responded to information regarding a house in Mkhuhlu where copper cables were allegedly kept and transported to late at night.

According to a Hawks’ Mpumalanga spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, Mogiba was informed about a search warrant upon arrival and granted the team permission to search the premises.

“During the search, aluminium cables suspected to be from Eskom were found on the premises. They were covered by a tarpaulin belonging to Transnet. More rolls of aluminium cables were found next to the house, also covered by a tarpaulin.

“An Eskom official was summoned to the scene and identified the cables as Eskom property. A Fidelity Guards investigator also identified the black tarpaulins as Transnet property. A lot of aluminium pots were found in and outside the house, suspected to have been manufactured from the smelting of stolen cables,” Sekgotodi said.

The case was postponed to February 1 for a formal bail application. Mogiba has been remanded in custody.
