Mpumalanga MEC visits Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality to educate pupils about democracy

Bonakele Majuba spoke about democracy and the power of voting before the upcoming elections set for May 29.

The Mpumalanga MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, visited Malatse Secondary School in the Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality to conduct civic and democracy education on Monday May 13.

Learners from Seruane Secondary School and Lehlabile Secondary School also participated in the programme. Majuba urged them to appreciate the opportunity given to them and use it in their best interests.

“We are meeting at a very critical time, at 16 days left for all of us to make a mark in an effort to deepen our hard-won democracy and freedom. We therefore sought to remind everyone that the democracy we are enjoying is a manifestation of the blood, sweat and tears of generations who fought relentlessly for a voice. We are certain you are aware that at some point in this country, black South Africans, your ancestors, endured brutality and made a sacrifice for the simple right to choose their leaders,” said Majuba.

He encouraged the attendees to vote in the upcoming national elections.

“I take this opportunity to encourage you to appreciate that every vote cast by your good selves or your fellow brothers and sisters is a tribute to the struggle. Your vote is a promise and confirmation that the fight by our struggle heroes and heroines was not in vain. So, the power to move this country forward lies with you and in your hands, and this is something that must not be taken for granted. You need to know that the right to vote is not just a piece of paper or act, it is a patriotic symbol of honour, forged in the fires for people’s emancipation,” Majuba said.
