Bushbuckridge snake catcher Cockroach Mdhluli saves the day again

Cockroach Mdhluli managed to save more than 10 venomous snakes from being killed by community members.

The mighty snake man, Cockroach Mdluli, saved more than 10 venomous snakes in two weeks and returned them back to the wild where they belong.

Mdluli rescued several deadly black mambas that were found in a house in Nyongane near Hazyview, as well as some other killer snakes, the Mozambique spitting cobra and a dangerous boomslang, in residential areas.

“It was also sad to have found some of these snakes killed by residents in a painful way, pouring hot water on them. So our people still need to understand that we don’t have to kill them, but instead call a trained snake catcher to catch them and remove them to a safe area. I was relieved to have saved more than 10 snakes that could have otherwise been killed or could have killed someone, because they are very dangerous,” he said.

Mdluli said during the summer season, snakes will move into residential areas for shelter, water and food.

He advises people to always close their doors and windows. “Some of the snakes can climb walls and hide in the house and strike when they feel threatened.

People also need to avoid walking without shoes,” he advised.

Mdluli, who has become quite the celebrity, urged people to mark the spot and call a snake catcher once they find snakes in their houses.

He stressed that the public must not try to catch them themselves if they are not properly trained, as they could be killed in the process.
