Masters soccer legends battle to a draw at Halls Sports Ground

White River Masters and Mataffin Masters held each other at a stalemate of 3-3.

In celebration of Women’s Month, Mataffin Masters and White River Masters clashed in a football encounter on Sunday, August 17 at Halls Sports Ground.

Their aim of this event was to highlight and educate about the critical issues of gender-based violence. In this thrilling match, Mataffin Masters’ and White River Masters’ attacks were noticeable from the moment the referee blew the whistle to start the game.

Both teams executed great defences. They drew 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes.

Mataffin Masters scored their first goal in the eighth minute when Innocent Mphahlane netted the from the spot when one of their strikers was fouled in the box. White River Masters’ dominance from the 20th minute of the encounter showed that they were determined to equalise before the half-time break.

Mushe Sithole scored the first goal for his team to make the score1-1 in the 24th minute. More chances were created by both teams between the 30th and 40th minute, but they could not convert them into goals.

In the 42nd minute, Ndleleni Magagula of Mataffin Masters put his team into a 2-1 lead. The match went to the half-time break with Mataffin Masters leading by 2-1.

In the second half, White River Masters pushed hard to create scoring opportunities after introducing fresh legs. They scored the equaliser through Andile Booi in the 52nd minute.

The visitors were hardly given an opportunity to enter the 18-yard area of Mataffin Masters as they played in the half of White River Masters from the 60th minute until the 75th minute. White River Masters scored with Sithole earning his brace in the 79th minute to make the score 3-2.

Vusi Matukane of Mataffin Masters scored the equalising goal in additional time. The game was hosted by local soccer legends in honour of Women’s Month.

The friendly games will continue until the last Sunday of August.
