Lowveld Walkers step into spring in Kaapmuiden

The walking club has undertaken various routes and they continue to make a mark in Mpumalanga and beyond.

The Lowveld Walkers took to the road on Saturday, September 6, to celebrate the arrival of spring with their much-loved annual Spring Walk.

The event drew many locals outdoors to enjoy the fresh season together. Participants set off from Kaapmuiden Police Station, making their way to Boulders and back. They could choose from four distance options: 5km, 10km, 15km, or 21km.

The Lowveld Walkers are no strangers to long-distance treks. The group walks almost every Saturday and has, over the years, introduced a variety of activities – from camps to cross-border expeditions – to keep members active and motivated. In July, they walked from Zimbabwe to South Africa

Last year, the group took on routes from South Africa into Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Founder Joseph Mashaba said the spring route was enjoyable and gave walkers the chance to push their limits. “The mood was fantastic during this annual event. This walk always brings out the fun side of everyone,” he said.

Mashaba noted that the turnout in Kaapmuiden was particularly encouraging. “Usually, when we host a race here, attendance is not as strong, but this time things were different. The warmer weather definitely helped – people didn’t struggle to get out of bed,” he added.

Looking ahead, Mashaba said the Walkers have big plans for the season. They will be hosting several awareness events, including a dedicated walk focusing on climate change.
