University of Mpumalanga bids farewell to founding vice chancellor

The University of Mpumalanga honoured founding vice chancellor Prof Thoko Mayekiso for her decade of transformative leadership.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) hosted a farewell ceremony for founding vice chancellor, Prof Thoko Mayekiso, on Friday, October 17.

The event was attended by academic leaders from various institutions, government representatives, the business community, UMP staff, and students.

In a recorded message, Prof Blade Nzimande, minister of science, technology and innovation, commended Mayekiso’s leadership and praised UMP for its remarkable growth and transformation.

Speaking on behalf of the Mpumalanga provincial government, MEC for co-operative governance, human settlement and traditional affairs Speed Mashilo thanked her for her contribution to the university.

He also congratulated the management team under her leadership for championing good governance, which resulted in UMP receiving an unqualified (clean) audit opinion for the eleventh consecutive year.

UMP chancellor, Chief Justice Mandisa Maya, said: “Her leadership, rooted in African values and entrepreneurship, has left a lasting legacy.”

The chairperson of council, Sabelo Mahlalela, applauded Mayekiso’s dedication, emphasising that her guidance has shaped UMP into a thriving institution that continues to inspire excellence.

Reflecting on her journey, Mayekiso said: “It has been a privilege to serve and deliver on all the promises made at my inauguration. We have celebrated a decade of excellence and built a university that stands tall among the best.”
The celebration featured vibrant cultural performances by students and staff, reflecting the university’s spirit of unity and appreciation for a leader whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
