Ex-public protector joins Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature
A former EFF member was sworn in to represent the MK Party in the provincial legislature.
Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane was sworn in as a member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature on April 10.
The speaker of the legislature, Makhosazane Masilela, presided over Mkhwebane’s swearing-in to represent the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party).
Mkhwebane took the oath of office and committed to upholding the Constitution and carrying out her duties with integrity, honesty, and dedication in service to the people of Mpumalanga.
The Bethal-born advocate and prosecutor served as the fourth South African public protector from 2016 until her impeachment in September 2023.
Following the impeachment, she served as a member of the National Assembly from October 2023 to October 2024, representing the EFF.

In October 2024, Mkhwebane resigned from the EFF and joined the MK Party.
In January 2025, she was appointed as the party’s provincial convener, and was removed from the position in April 2026 as part of MK Party’s collapsing of provincial structures into the executive.
Mkhwebane replaces Mary Morongwe Phadi, who previously served as a member and leader of the MK Party in the legislature until July 2025, when the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court ruled that she was no longer a member of the party or the legislature.
