 TS Galaxy shoots down Sundowns in Mbombela

TS Galaxy stunned Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 at Mbombela Stadium to secure a historic first league win over the champions and boost their Premiership survival hopes.

TS Galaxy delivered one of the biggest shocks of the Betway Premiership season after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday, May 12.

The victory marked the first time TS Galaxy have beaten Sundowns in a league fixture, while also dealing a major blow to Masandawana’s title ambitions.

Interim coach Bernard Parker masterminded the upset as the Rockets produced a fearless attacking display against the reigning champions.

Galaxy started brightly and were rewarded in the 7th minute when Victor Letsoalo calmly converted from the penalty spot to hand the hosts an early lead.

The Rockets doubled their advantage in the 18th minute through Sedwyn George, sending the home supporters into celebration.

Sundowns fought back before half-time as Brayan Leon struck twice in quick succession in the 38th and 41st minutes to level matters at 2-2 going into the break.

TS Galaxy, however, refused to back down and restored their lead moments after the restart when Mpho Mvelase found the net in the 46th minute to secure a memorable win for the Mpumalanga outfit.

The crucial victory ensured TS Galaxy’s Betway Premiership survival and lifted them to 12th on the log with 31 points.

They will wrap up their campaign against Golden Arrows at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on May 23.
