The festive season is a time of giving and rewarding those who have excelled throughout the year. Last Wednesday yours truly presided over an awards ceremony at Tsembaletfu Primary School in KaBokweni and I felt so touched watching those learners awaiting to be called onto the stage.

My heart still bleeds at the sight of those poor pupils, some in tattered uniforms, but very neatly dressed. I cannot forget seeing one with torn shoes, her socks protruding at the front, and the poor kid tucked them inside her worn-out shoes. There was one remarkable aspect: these learners are committed to education.

As one of the directors of AutoTec Foundation, a CSI organisation of which Lowveld Media is part, I had the privilege of handing out certificates, medals, booklets and trophies to those who excelled in their studies throughout the year. I did notice one thing, they were filled with a glimmer of hope, as I shook their hands one by one, that their destined future was one of hope.

I take this opportunity to appeal to all, that no matter how filthy rich we can be, and no matter how much food and clothing we have, we have to share it with the underprivileged, especially children.

They are so vulnerable and need the support of everybody to bring some relief into their lives.

I learnt that almost 80 per cent of the learners were orphans, and I felt they needed us even more. The government alone could not cover all their needs. We have to rally around one another to offer the children a good reason to live and be educated. They are as brilliant as everyone else, so why not give, be kind and offer them help?
