On the 18th of July the global icon, Dr Nelson Mandela was born. This year will be the first commemoration since he passed away on the 5th of December, 2013.
During his memorial service and his funeral, world descended to our shores to pay their last respect for this icon.
Mandela was a peace loving person and this is one of the reasons why he won the Nobel Peace award for his efforts to build a peaceful South Africa and the world at large.
As we celebrate his first commemoration since his passing away, let us try to remember him through what he stood for, something he will be proud of and that is building a better world where people can leave in peace and harmony.
As you read this piece, the world is confronted with lot of challenges concerning humanity. Gaza has been turned into an open-air prison where people (Palestinians in particular) are being killed daily.
People of South Sudan and Sudan are still battling to find the lasting solutions to their problems. Ukraine is also burning and yet the world’s leaders are watching but cannot see.
If we want to honour the legacy of Madiba, the United Nations must spend its 67 minutes resolving these challenges.
It will not be enough for this legend to be honoured through speeches, we need tangible solutions that will end the conflict between Israel and Palestine; Ukraine, Russia and the United States; Sudan and South Sudan as well as the global increase of terrorist activities.
Boko Haram and the Nigerian government must stop playing games with the lives of the people of Nigeria, we need those girls back.
The world has enough challenges of poverty, development and under-development; this should be what we are fighting to resolves than some obsessed perverts playing with the lives of the people.
If our leaders are failing to deal with these issues, they must not even bother to make speeches about Nelson Mandela, it will be a disgrace to his legacy, for Madiba himself was very vocal when it comes to these challenges. He was never a coward.
