Our View: Zuma calls an end to corruption

It is good news to have heard ANC President Jacob Zuma spell out some good intent from his government when he delivered his annual January 8 Statement last Saturday.

Be that as it may, on the community front, it’s feasible that there should be councillors directly nominated by people in a branch and they shouldn’t be imposed upon the people.

We’ve already heard of possible candidates for those positions in many wards, but here people are still being told to follow all processes so that in the end, it is people’s choice of the right candidates that will assume positions as councillors in the forthcoming local government elections later this year.

Zuma has called for an end to corruption and says that it will never be tolerated and perpetrators will be severely dealt with by authorities.

This is very interesting because it is his party members who are constantly accused of alleged corruption and so forth. What this calls for, as he spelled on Saturday, that would-be councillors will be vetted before being allowed to stand for any position, a point in the right direction for meaningful change.

The problem with politicians, not only the ANC, is that some of their candidates are not suitable as they do not have people’s aspirations at heart, but are self-centered individuals who have, more often than, brought their organisations into disrepute. The crux of the matter here is not about who lands the position, but it’s about who you’re aligned with.

The onus is to reward individuals for all the support they’ve given, rather than checking the credentials and capabilities of individuals who are selected for counsellorship, irrespective of any political party.

This forthcoming local government election is good news for the various communities around the country because government will really deliver on their promises as they’ve already indicated that land restitution payments will be affected this year, among other things in line to be delivered. I wonder what opposition parties will be displaying in their election campaigns? Time will tell.
