90 000 Limpopo residents face water crisis following heatwave
Approximately 90 000 residents in the Mopani District, in Limpopo are facing a water crisis after the Thapane Dam dried up due to the heatwave in the province last week.
Mopani District Municipality spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana said the water shortage would affect 35 villages in the Relela Cluster, Capricorn Review reported.
According to him, the municipality requires about R70 Million to address the severe water shortages in the area.
“The Thapane Dam which is the main source of water in the area dried up following a protracted drought that has ravaged most parts of the Mopani District Municipal area,”
“The required amount is meant for among other things; the rehabilitation of boreholes, construction of additional boreholes, construction of additional storage, the construction of pipelines and general repairs of surface water infrastructure as an intervention to the continuing problem,” he said.
Shikwambana said the municipality was currently supplying water to the area through a limited number of boreholes and water tankers.
He urged community members to use the limited amount of water sparingly to avoid further challenges.
“[The municipality] want to assure community members that it will continue to spare no effort in ensuring that community members have access to water while awaiting the much needed rains in the area,” he added.
