Drugs, believed to be crystal meth, with an estimated street value of more than R12 million, were found and seized.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) together with members of Rooiberg Saps, discovered a fully-operational clandestine drug laboratory at Kwenayamadiba farm on Monday.

According to a statement by Hawks Limpopo Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke, the operation is part of their continuous effort to curb the mushrooming of drugs in the province.

The Hawks received information about an illegal drug manufacturing laboratory from Crime Intelligence Unit members, and followed it up, said Maluleke.

“Upon arrival on the farm in Rooiberg outside Bela-Bela, the Hawks members found Crime Intelligence Unit members and SAPS Rooiberg detectives, who already cordoned off the scene of a fully functional drug manufacturing laboratory,” he added.

Drugs, believed to be crystal meth, with an estimated street value of more than R12 million, were found and seized.

“One suspect, aged 34, who is believed to be in charge of the drug lab, has been arrested and is expected to appear in the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on today on charges relating to dealing in drugs,” Maluleke explained.

He added that more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
