Rietfontein mother in court for drowning baby in boiling water
The 29-year-old was arrested a day later while on the run to Pretoria.
A 29-year-old Rietfontein woman appeared in the Brits magistrate’s court today for allegedly drowning her newborn baby in a 20-litre bucket of boiling water.
According to NPA Pretoria regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, Wendy Tapiwa Chipo reportedly first tried to “abort” the baby.
“When that failed and the baby was eventually born, she killed the infant and put the body in a plastic bag.
“Together with a friend, she went to bury the baby near where she stays in Sunnyway village in Rietfontein.
“She asked the friend not to tell anyone about what she had done,” said Mahanjana.
“But on 17 March, the friend could not keep the secret anymore and reported the incident to the police. She then took the police to where they had buried the baby.”
She said Chipo was arrested a day later while she was on the run to Pretoria.
Chipo has abandoned her bail application and the matter was postponed to 14 May 2021 for further investigation.
