Kempton police officer turns gun on himself at petrol station

Two reports of suicide in one day.

According to Norkem Park SAPS, a police officer from Kempton Park SAPS allegedly turned a gun on himself at a petrol station on Friday, December 3 at 18:30.

Sgt Barbara-Anne Ferreira from Norkem Park SAPS, in a statement issued on behalf of acting station commander Lt Col KS Ramethe, stated that Norkem Park SAPS’ Captain Molomme and Cst Ramothoala received reports of a shooting at a Total garage at the corner of Ossewa and Zuurfontein roads in Chloorkop.

“On arrival, the petrol attendant informed the police that she was attending to a white Mercedes Benz of which the driver requested R800 petrol.

“Suddenly she heard a gun shot. She turned and saw the driver had shot himself while his wife was still at the garage shop,” said Ferreira.

She said during further police assessment it was found that the deceased was a member of the Kempton Park SAPS.

“The wife had apparently arrived from Limpopo the same day.”

In a separate incident, on the same day, December 3, Kempton Park SAPS also opened an iquest for an alleged suicide.

Capt Jethro Mtshali from Kempton SAPS confirmed that a suicide inquest was opened after reports of a shooting at an estate in Glen Marais where the body of a man was found inside a garage.
