R7m worth of abalone found in Bloemfontein home
Free State police have arrested five suspects after the body of an elderly person was found outside his home in Ficksburg over the weekend.
The Hawks in the Free State swooped down on suspected abalone smugglers in Bayswater in Bloemfontein this morning, confiscating illicit abalone worth an estimated R7 million.
This comes after information was received which led to the arrest of six suspects aged between the ages of 20 and 40 years.
According to the Hawks spokesperson, Captain Christopher Singo, a joint team conducted a search and seizure operation where they uncovered dry and wet abalone.
“The Hawks’ Serious Organized Crime Investigation team, together with the Tactical Response Team (TRT), the K9 Unit as well as the Local Record Centre (LCRC), all based in the city, busted the illegal abalone facility,” said Singo.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
