Couple accused of defrauding KZN Blind and Deaf Society of R12m

A woman who worked as a finance officer at the organisation and her husband, appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday on charges of fraud, theft and money laundering.

The KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society has welcomed the arrest and court appearance of a couple, accused of defrauding the organisation of more than R12 million.

It is alleged that Ruvanya Ramiah (30) worked as a finance officer when she misappropriated funds, and her husband, Ayush Rambally (31), accepted financial pay-outs to his bank account. They are accused of defrauding the society of R12 785 634.

In a statement, the society claims that Ramiah intentionally misappropriated funds and defrauded or stole money by transferring it from the society’s bank accounts to bank accounts within her control or to a bank account held by Rambally.

“President of the society, Veetha Sewkuran, expresses her deep gratitude to Colonel Sibiya (investigating officer), and is confident, that justice will prevail,” the organisation states.

The couple was arrested on April 14 and will remain in custody until their next court appearance.

NPA regional spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, confirms that the duo is set to reappear in court later this month.

“It is alleged that they stole this money from the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society from March 2012 to December 2018, while Ramiah was employed there.

“They were arrested in Estcourt after evading authorities for some time. The matter returns to court on April 28, for a bail application,” says Ramkisson-Kara.
