Menlyn to ‘review procedures’ after 2 plummet to death in about a month
It is not known whether the latest victim was pushed or jumped when he plummeted to his death at the popular shopping centre in Pretoria.
Menlyn Park shopping centre in the east of Pretoria said it would review its procedures after two people fell to their deaths from the upper-level floors recently.
“We are reviewing our internal procedures in light of the recent incidents and are investigating mitigating measures going forward,” said centre spokesperson Andrea Vanschoor.
She would not, however, comment on what exact measures these would be.
“We will advise further once we’ve engaged internally,” she said.
The statement by the centre came after a 29-year-old employee fell to his death from the upper floor around 09:45 on Sunday.
It was the second such incident in the same area in about a month.
Centre general manager Nisha Kemraj said the man reportedly worked at the Sunglass Hut in the centre.
Emergency medical services were immediately called to the scene.
According to Pro Med spokesperson Michael Gough, the man was declared dead on the scene.
“We are currently not sure if he was pushed or jumped,” said Gough.
On July 7, a 31-year-old man died when he also fell from the top floor of the centre .
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said an inquest docket was opened at the Brooklyn police station after the latest incident.
Social media users expressed horror at the incidents.

A user said, “I doubt they’d (Menlyn Mall) want to be labelled the suicide mall of SA phela this is too much now!”
The incidents at the mall are claimed to be suicides.
The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) said it received over 75 000 suicide calls in 2021.
The group runs the country’s dedicated suicide crisis helpline.
“There are still many more people who haven’t reached out or who are too scared to talk to someone, and don’t know where to go for help,”
“If you are suffering from depression and don’t know where to turn, please call 0800 567 567 for free telephone counselling, information, crisis intervention and referrals to resources countrywide,” it said.
The line is open and available seven days a week, 365 days a year.
